Influence 150: 150 Years of Shaping a City, a Nation, the World

September 5 - December 7, 2003

In honor of its sesquicentennial, Washington University invites you to take a look back at its rich history in the exhibition Influence 150: 150 Years of Shaping a City, a Nation, the World. This exhibition traces the development of the University from its founding in 1853 as Eliot Seminary to its growth into one of the leading academic institutions in the United States. Influence 150 is divided into two parts -- the first section contains hundreds of archival photographs, drawings, posters, correspondence, and other materials observing both institutional and individual achievements in the fields of medicine, science, technology, law, business, the humanities, and the arts. The second section showcases some of the significant works from the Mildred Kemper Lane Art Museum and traces the history of collecting at the Museum. Among the notable artists on display are Harriet Hosmer, George Caleb Bingham, Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, and Lorna Simpson, to name a few.

The exhibition was organized by the Sesquicentennial Commission of Washington University and designed and produced by Blue Road. All artifacts and objects in the exhibition are drawn from University Archives or Special Collections on both the Hilltop and Medical School campuses.
